About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Miss Twichell in 1935, producing this portrait negative on safety film. The archive record does not identify her further.
Genthe kept a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, then moved to New York and continued working into the 1940s. He died in 1942. The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death.
By 1935 Genthe had been working for nearly four decades in the soft-focus pictorialist style. Studio portraits formed a substantial part of his output. The Library of Congress collection holds several thousand such portraits alongside his other work.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
