James Monroe Fears served in Company K of the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. His son, Arch Franklin Fears, wears a uniform from the First World War.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. Local studios photographed enlistees in uniform before they left, often producing the only formal portrait a young man ever sat for. Many were made so that a copy could stay at home.

The photograph was made by F. S. McKnight.
