About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mrs. Deneville in 1920, producing this portrait on a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s.
After Genthe's death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his other photographic work.
The record provides no further information about Mrs. Deneville or the circumstances of the sitting.
