About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Elizabeth Fisher in 1930. The portrait exists as a nitrate negative measuring five by seven inches, now held by the Library of Congress.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s.
After Genthe's death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. This collection includes several thousand studio portraits like the Fisher photograph, as well as over 400 images of San Francisco's Chinatown and hundreds of dance photographs.
The record provides no information about Fisher herself or the circumstances of the sitting.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
