About this photograph
This portrait of Elizabeth Fisher was made by Arnold Genthe in 1930. The original negative is held by the Library of Congress as part of the Genthe collection.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style from a San Francisco studio between 1896 and 1911, then relocated to New York where he continued photographing into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.
The archive record identifies the subject only as Elizabeth Fisher. No further details about her identity or the circumstances of the sitting are provided. The portrait exists as a nitrate negative measuring five by seven inches, a standard format for studio work of the period.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
