About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Alexander Goldstein in 1909, producing this portrait on a glass plate negative. The photograph was made during Genthe's San Francisco period, when he operated a studio in the city.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained his San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits.
