1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Mary Hawkins in 1920. The image survives as a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative now held by the Library of Congress.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He kept a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, then moved to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record provides no information about Mary Hawkins herself, her age, or why she sat for this portrait.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
