Sidney Robertson Cowell note on verso of photo incorrectly identifies the person photographed as John Boro. Forms part of a group of field materials documenting John Botica performing Dalmatian dance music from Croatia on May 26, 1938 and January 11, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Mountain View, California.

The photograph shows John Botica in right profile. Sidney Robertson Cowell's note on the back of the print misidentifies him as John Boro. The image belongs to a group of field materials documenting Botica performing Dalmatian dance music from Croatia, recorded on two dates in 1938 and 1939 in Mountain View, California.

Sidney Robertson Cowell directed the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project, concentrated in 1938 to 1940, which recorded and photographed traditional musicians across Northern California. Cowell worked across the state's immigrant communities rather than focusing on a single tradition.
