About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Horace Kelland in 1930. The portrait survives as a nitrate negative measuring five by seven inches, now held by the Library of Congress.
Genthe maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated from San Francisco in 1911. He worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits of which this is one.
The archive record does not identify Kelland further or indicate the circumstances of the sitting.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
