1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe created this portrait negative in 1918. The record identifies the sitter only as "Lubovska."

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s. This portrait dates to his New York period.

The negative was part of a large body of work that remained in Genthe's studio at his death in 1942. The Library of Congress later acquired roughly 20,000 items from the unclaimed material, including several thousand studio portraits alongside his photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance subjects, and autochromes.

The 5 x 7 inch glass negative represents a standard portrait format of the period. Beyond the surname and the year, the archive record provides no further details about the sitter or the circumstances of the sitting.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
