The medal's designation as a Massachusetts Minute Men 1861 medal suggests it commemorated Civil War service, though the record does not specify the reason for its authorization or issue four decades after 1861. No information about Fears himself, the 8th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment's service record, or the circumstances of the medal's presentation is provided.
