A 1917 photograph showing William Mehrten, his son Ralph, and his mother Mary Kuker Mehrten at a family picnic on the Mehrten Ranch near Lemon Cove, California.

The family ranch was located near Lemon Cove in Tulare County, which sits in California's San Joaquin Valley. The region was settled heavily in the later nineteenth century and its agriculture depended on irrigation.

The photographer is unidentified. The photograph is held by the Tulare County library as part of its local history collection, which documents ordinary residents, families, schools and businesses of the area rather than public figures. It was digitised through California Revealed, a statewide programme that makes material from California libraries, archives, museums and historical societies publicly available.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
