1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Madame Melba in 1917. The negative is preserved in the Library of Congress collection of Genthe's work.

Genthe maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated from San Francisco in 1911. He worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits alongside photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance subjects, and autochromes.

The record identifies the subject as Madame Melba but provides no further information about her. The negative was made on nitrate film stock and measures five by seven inches.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
