1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed this portrait of a subject identified only as Master Neuhaus in 1909. The glass plate negative measures 5 by 7 inches.

Genthe maintained a portrait studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York. He worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits along with extensive documentation of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance photography, and autochromes.

The minimal cataloguing information for this portrait reflects a common limitation in early twentieth-century studio records, where sitters were sometimes identified only by surname and title or simply by appointment date.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
