Public domain 1916 family portrait of the Watanabe family in Pueblo, Colorado. Shows six family members including Aiko, Tom, Masano, Tomoichi, Teru, and Hide.

The archive record names six members of the Watanabe family photographed in Pueblo, Colorado in June 1916: Aiko, Tom, Masano, Tomoichi, Teru, and Hide. The photographer is not known.

Between roughly 1880 and 1920 some 20 million people arrived in the United States. Studio portraits from this period often served a specific purpose for immigrant families, made at home to leave with relatives before departure, or taken soon after arrival and sent back as proof of safe passage and employment.

The photograph entered this collection through California Revealed, a statewide digitisation programme that works with libraries, archives, museums and historical societies across California to make holdings publicly available. Material tagged with this source comes from many different local institutions, so the designation indicates where the item was digitised rather than where it was originally created.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
