About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mr. Ackermann in 1908 as a studio portrait, captured on a glass negative measuring five by seven inches.
Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York. Working in the soft-focus pictorialist style, he produced thousands of studio portraits over a four-decade career.
The Library of Congress holds this negative as part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Beyond the studio portraits, the archive includes photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance studies, and autochromes.
The archive record provides no further information about the sitter's identity or the circumstances of the sitting.
