1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass negative from Arnold Genthe's studio shows a portrait of Miss Adele Verne made in 1908. Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style during his decades-long career, maintaining a San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York.

The portrait is part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items acquired by the Library of Congress from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Though the collection includes several thousand studio portraits like this one, it also preserves over 400 images of San Francisco's Chinatown and hundreds of dance photographs.

The original negative measures 5 by 7 inches. The 1908 date places the portrait during Genthe's San Francisco period, when he was building the body of work that would eventually enter the national collection.
