1 slide : lantern ; 4 x 5 in. or smaller.

This lantern slide preserves a portrait by Arnold Genthe from 1896, the year he opened his San Francisco studio. The sitter's identity has not been recorded.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After maintaining his San Francisco studio until 1911, he relocated to New York and continued photographing into the 1940s. Following his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 unclaimed items from his studio.

The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside extensive documentation of other subjects. The lantern slide format allowed photographic images to be projected for lectures, educational programs, and entertainment during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
