1 negative : nitrate ; 35 mm.

This photograph shows Fred Rowe, identified as a farmer near Estherville, Iowa, with his family in their home in 1936.

Russell Lee made the exposure as part of the federal photography project that became the Farm Security Administration section. Between 1935 and 1944, the unit sent photographers across the country to document rural poverty and New Deal programmes. The project produced around 175,000 negatives, now held by the Library of Congress.

The photograph survives as a 35mm nitrate negative.
