Russell Lee photographed Fred Rowe, identified as a farmer near Estherville, Iowa, with his family at home in 1936. The photograph was made for the federal photography project that documented rural poverty and New Deal relief programmes during the Depression. Roy Stryker directed the unit, which sent photographers across the country to record conditions in farm communities and the government's response.

The negative is held by the Library of Congress as part of a collection numbering around 175,000 images made between 1935 and 1944.
