Arnold Genthe photographed Erma Nebolsine in 1936. Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a New York studio into the 1940s.

The archive record notes that the original negative had deteriorated by 1991, when the electronic image was made. The collection preserved the photograph by creating an interpositive before further damage occurred, from which prints can still be ordered.

This portrait forms part of the Genthe photograph collection at the Library of Congress, which acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his other work.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
