1 slide : lantern ; 4 x 5 in. or smaller.

This lantern slide shows a portrait of Frank Norris made in 1896. The photograph was taken by Arnold Genthe, who opened a studio in San Francisco that same year.

The item is held by the Library of Congress as part of a large collection acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. That collection contains roughly 20,000 items, including several thousand studio portraits made across his four-decade career.

The slide format indicates the image was intended for projection. Lantern slides were a common way to display photographs for lectures, entertainment, or educational purposes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The record does not identify which Frank Norris this portrait represents or provide information about the circumstances of the sitting.
