About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed an individual identified only as Mr. Lhevinne in 1909. The sitting took place during Genthe's San Francisco period, when he maintained a studio in the city from 1896 to 1911.
The photograph survives as a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches. Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style, a characteristic approach across his four-decade career. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other bodies of work.
The archive record provides no further detail about the sitter's identity beyond the surname and honorific.
