1 negative : safety ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Frank Norris in 1896, the year Genthe opened his San Francisco studio. The negative is a safety film format measuring 5 by 7 inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained his San Francisco studio until 1911, after which he relocated to New York. Following his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside documentary work.

The portrait dates to the beginning of Genthe's photographic career in California. Safety film, which replaced earlier flammable nitrate stock, offered greater stability for long-term preservation of negatives.
