1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified subject identified in his records only as "Professor Stephens" in 1909. The glass plate negative measures five by seven inches.

Genthe kept a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.

The archive record provides no further information about Professor Stephens, including their field of study, institutional affiliation, or reason for sitting for a portrait. The photograph remains one of several thousand studio portraits in Genthe's collection.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
