1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed a person identified only as "Professor Stephens" in 1909. The glass negative measures five by seven inches.

Genthe kept a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside hundreds of other subjects.

The record provides no further information about Professor Stephens, their field of work, or the occasion for the portrait. The year 1909 places the sitting during Genthe's San Francisco period, three years before he would relocate to New York.
