1 negative : nitrate ; 4 x 5 in. or smaller.

This portrait shows an unidentified child, captured on nitrate negative by Arnold Genthe in 1896. That year marked the beginning of Genthe's work in San Francisco, where he maintained a studio until 1911.

The photographer is known for his soft-focus pictorialist style. Over a career spanning four decades, he produced studio portraits alongside extensive documentary work. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The child's name and the circumstances of the sitting are not recorded. The negative format, four by five inches or smaller, was standard for studio portraiture of the period.
