About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed David Belasco in 1909. The portrait survives as a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911. After 1911 he moved to New York and continued working into the 1940s. When he died in 1942, his studio contents went unclaimed. The Library of Congress later acquired roughly 20,000 items from that studio, including several thousand portraits alongside images of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance photographs, and hundreds of autochromes.
This negative forms part of that collection.
