1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Pat Calhoun in 1907, producing a glass-plate negative that now resides in the Library of Congress.

Genthe maintained a portrait studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. This photograph was made during that period, roughly midway through his years in the city. After Genthe's death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits alongside photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, dance subjects, and autochromes.

The 5 x 7 inch glass negative represents the standard format Genthe used for portrait work during this era. No further information about the sitter or the circumstances of the sitting has been preserved in the archive record.
