1 negative : nitrate ; 5 x 7 in. | Photograph shows William Douglas Carlebach, father of Michael Carlbach. (Source: M. Carlebach, 2018)

This 1922 negative by Arnold Genthe shows William Douglas Carlebach, identified from information provided by his son Michael Carlbach in 2018.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style across a career of four decades. After keeping a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, he moved to New York, where he worked into the 1940s.

The Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside specialized bodies of work.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
