About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Paul Reimers in 1921. The portrait was captured on a 5 x 7 inch nitrate negative.
Genthe maintained a photography practice spanning four decades, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After operating a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, he relocated to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s.
Following Genthe's death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. This collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other photographic work. The portrait of Paul Reimers forms part of this archive, preserved as a nitrate negative from Genthe's New York period.
