About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mabel Cramer in 1907. The portrait was recorded on a 5 x 7 inch glass plate negative.
Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.
The archive record does not identify who Mabel Cramer was or why she sat for this portrait. Studio portraiture formed a substantial part of Genthe's practice during his San Francisco years, and this negative is one of several thousand such portraits in the collection.
