1 negative : safety ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Katherine Hawley in 1932. The image survives as a safety negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record identifies the subject only by name. Nothing further is recorded about Katherine Hawley, the circumstances of the sitting, or what the portrait was commissioned for.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
