About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Mrs. Shelton in 1932. The image survives as a safety negative measuring five by seven inches.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a studio in New York during this period, having relocated from San Francisco in 1911. This portrait is one of several thousand studio portraits he produced over a career spanning four decades.
The Library of Congress holds the negative as part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.
The archive record does not identify Mrs. Shelton further or provide details of the sitting.
