About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed the Loewery children in 1925. The negative, made on nitrate film stock in the five-by-seven-inch format, survives in the collection the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's studio after his death in 1942.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained studios in San Francisco and later New York. By 1925 he had been working in New York for over a decade, having left San Francisco in 1911. Studio portraits formed a substantial portion of his practice alongside his work in other subjects.
The archive record does not identify the sitters beyond their surname or indicate where the sitting took place. The negative remains part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items that passed to the Library of Congress when Genthe's studio materials went unclaimed following his death.
