1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass negative portrait of author Jack London was made by Arnold Genthe in 1906. Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York.

The photograph dates from a pivotal year in London's career, when he was at the height of his literary fame. The 5 x 7 inch glass negative is part of the Library of Congress's Genthe collection, which contains roughly 20,000 items acquired from the photographer's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.

The negative format and studio portrait setting were typical of Genthe's commercial practice during his San Francisco period, when he produced several thousand such portraits alongside his other photographic work.
