1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass-plate negative shows a portrait of writer Jack London, photographed by Arnold Genthe in 1906. The image was created during Genthe's San Francisco years, when he maintained a studio in the city from 1896 to 1911.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his career. After leaving San Francisco, he relocated to New York and continued photographing into the 1940s. When he died in 1942, his studio contents went unclaimed. The Library of Congress subsequently acquired approximately 20,000 items from that studio, forming the collection this negative now belongs to.

The 5-by-7-inch glass negative is part of a holdings that includes several thousand studio portraits alongside Genthe's other photographic work from his decades-long career.
