1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Elizabeth Murkland in his studio in 1907. The portrait was captured on a 5 x 7 inch glass negative.

Genthe maintained a San Francisco studio from 1896 to 1911, working in the soft-focus pictorialist style. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand studio portraits like this one.

The glass negative format was standard for professional portrait work in this period, allowing photographers to produce high-quality prints for clients. Beyond his portrait practice, Genthe's archive includes over 400 images of San Francisco's Chinatown and hundreds of dance photographs.

Nothing further is known about Elizabeth Murkland from the archive record.
