1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed the Stieffel children in 1912, producing this glass plate negative. The portrait was made during Genthe's early years in New York, where he had relocated the previous year after keeping a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his career. The Library of Congress later acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits like this one, alongside his other photographic work.

The archive record provides no further information about the Stieffel family or the circumstances of the sitting.
