1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass plate negative, taken by Arnold Genthe in 1907, preserves a portrait of a group identified only as "Turpin." The negative measures five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style and maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.

The archive record provides no further information about the subjects, their relationship to one another, the occasion for the portrait, or the identity of anyone pictured. Without additional documentation, the reason this group sat for Genthe and what became of them afterward remain unknown.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
