About this photograph
This portrait was made by Arnold Genthe in 1921. The original is a 5×7 inch nitrate negative now held by the Library of Congress.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style from a studio in San Francisco between 1896 and 1911, then moved to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.
The record identifies the sitter only as Mr. Asano. No other information about him appears in the archive materials.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
