1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

This glass negative shows a portrait of someone identified as Major Bastedo, photographed in 1917. Arnold Genthe made the photograph during his New York period, having moved his studio there from San Francisco in 1911.

The record provides no further information about the sitter's identity, military service, or the circumstances of the sitting. The designation "Major" indicates military rank, and the date falls during the First World War, but the archive materials do not specify which service branch or theater of operations.

The negative is part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items from Genthe's studio acquired by the Library of Congress after his death in 1942. While the collection contains several thousand studio portraits, most of Genthe's documented work focused on other subjects, including San Francisco's Chinatown, dance photography, and color autochromes.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
