About this photograph
The Library of Congress holds this portrait as a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches. Arnold Genthe photographed Major Bastedo in 1917.
Genthe maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio.
The record identifies neither Bastedo's given name nor the military service in which he held his rank. The title "Major" indicates a field-grade officer, but the archive provides no further details about his service or the circumstances of the sitting.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
