Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified individual identified in his records only as "Mr. Koum̌" in 1921. By that year Genthe had relocated his portrait practice from San Francisco to New York, where he continued working in the soft-focus pictorialist style that characterized his four-decade career.

The negative was part of Genthe's studio holdings, which the Library of Congress acquired after his death in 1942. The collection of roughly 20,000 items includes several thousand studio portraits alongside his better-known documentation of San Francisco's Chinatown and extensive dance photographs.

Nothing further is known about the sitter or the circumstances of the sitting.
