About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed Garland Lasater in 1921. The portrait was made on a nitrate negative measuring five by seven inches.
Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He had maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued working into the 1940s.
After Genthe's death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired approximately 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio. This collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other bodies of work.
