1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Irene Marcellus in 1916. The portrait was captured on a glass negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. By 1916 he had relocated his practice from San Francisco to New York, where he maintained a studio through the 1940s. After his death in 1942, the Library of Congress acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio, including several thousand portraits like this one.

The negative preserves a formal studio sitting from the mid-1910s, though the archive record provides no further details about the sitter or the circumstances of the session.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
