1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified woman identified in the archive only as Miss Patterson in 1912. The portrait was made as a glass plate negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe had recently moved his studio from San Francisco to New York in 1911, so this portrait dates from his early period working in the city. He worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style throughout his career, which spanned four decades from the 1890s into the 1940s.

The photograph is part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other bodies of work.

Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
