Allison, Mr., portrait photograph

Archive record
1 negative : glass ; 4 x 5 in.
About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed an unidentified man identified only as "Mr. Allison" in 1915, producing this glass negative portrait. By that year Genthe had relocated his practice from San Francisco to New York, where he maintained a studio through the 1940s.
The negative survives as part of a collection of roughly 20,000 items the Library of Congress acquired from Genthe's unclaimed studio after his death in 1942. Working in the soft-focus pictorialist style, Genthe built a body of work over four decades that included several thousand studio portraits alongside other subjects.
No further details about the sitter's identity, occupation, or reason for sitting have been recorded with the negative. The formal designation "Mr. Allison" in the title offers the only trace of who stood before Genthe's camera that day.
