Francis, Mr., portrait photograph

Archive record

About this photograph
Arnold Genthe photographed a man identified only as Mr. Francis in 1915. The portrait was captured on a glass negative measuring five by seven inches.
By this date Genthe had relocated his practice from San Francisco to New York, where he continued working in the soft-focus pictorialist style that characterized his four-decade career. The Library of Congress later acquired roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio after his death in 1942.
The archive provides no further information about the sitter's full name, occupation, or reason for sitting. The negative survives as one of several thousand studio portraits in Genthe's collection.
Compiled from the catalogue record and reference notes on the formats and events involved. The archive record above is the primary source.
