1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in.

Arnold Genthe photographed Irene Marcellus in 1915. The image survives as a glass-plate negative measuring five by seven inches.

Genthe worked in the soft-focus pictorialist style. He maintained a studio in San Francisco from 1896 to 1911 before relocating to New York, where he continued photographing into the 1940s. After his death in 1942, roughly 20,000 items from his unclaimed studio were acquired by the Library of Congress.

The collection includes several thousand studio portraits alongside other photographic work. This portrait of Marcellus dates from Genthe's New York period, four years after he left San Francisco.
